Welcome to the Hurley Group

An X-ray computed tomography image of a compressed granular material. Stresses in each particle are available from 3D X-ray diffraction measurements.

Welcome to the Hurley Group webpage. Our group studies the physics and mechanics of structurally complex materials, including composites, structural, granular and geologic materials. We are interested in developing and using advanced experimental techniques to observe deformation and failure mechanisms in these materials in order to develop better theories and numerical models for predicting their behavior. Our current research topics and recent publications can be found on our Research and Publications pages.  If you are interested in working with our group, please see our Opportunities page and consider contacting Professor Hurley for more information.

We are a member of the Hopkins Extreme Materials Institute and the Mechanical Engineering Department within the Whiting School of Engineering.
